Three Wise Men

Three Wise Men came to me
with three gifts, on Christmas morn
they had followed a star to see
the saviour-king who was newly born.

And when I was a young child
exploring the world as a child plays
I got lost for three days
but within a home of God, I smiled.

A spirit led me into the wilderness
to be three times tempted by the Devil
Satan wanted to make me one of his
but I gave visiting angels my soul.

I taught so that all might remember-
"to Ask, to Seek and to Knock"
for with these keys, all things surrender
and Heaven's doors unlock.

I was 3 times ten plus 3 years old
speaking out for Faith, Hope & Charity
some thought me evil, others called me bold
but what I did, I did for thee.

"I am not," was all that Peter would say
when asked if he is one of my disciples
his third denial came after I was led away,
before the moment a cock crows.

Many think I dropped the cross three times
on the way to my crucifixion
and with two others found guilty of crimes,
that 3 of us had embarked towards Heaven.

It is believed that three nails were used
to bind each hand and both feet
- my executioners expected to be abused
but with words like these I chose to speak:

"And though my flesh deeply pangs for water
while blood also trickles from each hand,
please forgive them oh Father
for they do not understand".

It was Pilate who inscribed above my head,
in Greek, Latin and Hebrew,
on a wooden plaque that could be read:
'Jesus the Nazarene the King of every Jew'.

When at 3 o'clock, I was to take my leave
so that future generations might believe,
some say I said this simple phrase of three:
"I am thirsty"

One nearby, rushed up to me
with a sponge soaked in sour wine
but others around said "Let him be!",
to see if God would save me in time.

It was on the third day that I rose
after having been crucified
and every kind-hearted person knows,
it was for each of you that I died.

Three women with spices sweet,
came to soothe their hearts by anointing me
but I had gone before them, to Galilee
for it is there we were to meet.

To my disciples behind shut doors,
I came twice to be heard
then near the sea of the Tiberieas shores,
meant this visit was my third.

I asked Simon Peter three questions
knowing he would answer the same
my undying love was given in these lessons,
so that all the future might gain.

All authority in Heaven and on Earth
had been given to me on the day,
that I had known since my birth
I would be ascending with yet much to say.

But, so that all nations might realize
hoping all peoples would come to hear it
my disciples were sent out to baptize,
"in the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit".

Like a thief in the night,
I am to come unto you
though some believe this untrue,
I pray your heart shines my light.

Tis not a mystical coincidence
that my life's story has patterns-of-three
you must come to know of its significance
as my love for you has not forsaken thee.

The full 333 line (including title) version of the Three Wise Men poem is as follows. (The Narration was taken from several different biblical sources and is meant to be a chronicle of events as described in the various accounts):

Three Wise Men

Three Wise Men came to me
with three gifts, on Christmas morn
they had followed a star to see,
the saviour-king who was newly born.

For in the beginning was the word
whereby, with God the word was
and the word was a god, so I've heard,
making some think I'm the word, just because.

And when I was a young child
exploring the world as a child plays
I got lost for three days
but within a home of God, I smiled.

A spirit led me into the wilderness
to be three times tempted by the Devil
Satan wanted to make me one of his
but I gave visiting angels my soul.

"Be gone Satan!," these words I said to him
as it is God alone that I must worship
release thy feeble, futile grip
and be away from me, evermore, this when.

A great light was seen by those in darkness
they at last could behold the clear
so very plain it was, that I said this:
"Repent!, for Heaven's Kingdom is near".

I had summoned twelve to my side
that they might continue with me
and to send them out to preach with pride,
with authority to make demons flee.

My friends & family thought my sanity lost
fearing I might blemish the family name,
they wanted to stop me at any cost
so I left them, without blame—
-for their arguments were unsound
because my search for truth had found,
that I was destined for lasting fame.

I taught so that all might remember-
"to Ask, to Seek and to Knock"
for with these keys, all things surrender
and Heaven's doors unlock.
I was 3 times ten plus 3 years old
speaking out for Faith, Hope & Charity
some thought me evil, others called me bold
but what I did, I did for thee.

Observe the birds of heavenly chase
they don't sow, reap, or put in storehouses
yet God above, provides them a place
therefore, be not one who enviously browses.

May you never be anxious as those who say:
what will we eat?, or drink?, or put on?,
and never be anxious about the next day,
for it is a future's past already gone.

Go in through the narrow gate
even though two abreast may not enter
your self-told prophecies harbor a faith,
so before it's too late, unto me, surrender.

I await thee there, before thy very eyes
step forward and never look back
leave behind any who are fearful to realize,
that original creativity follows this path.

Compromise not your love meant for me,
-to travel the broad road with a loved one
it is your choice of with whom to be,
but my father's judgment cannot be undone.

I told some to tell, and others not to say
yet still more, I said nothing to
but all of them went out of their way,
to reveal of the works I do.

God's kingdom is like a man casting seed-
whose experiences tell of something to grow
he will look for signs in order to read,
but to ask him why, his wisdom doesn't know.

Of its own self the ground bears fruit
first the grass blades and then the stalks
such is God's way of revealing his truth,
with a ripened gain, when a prophet talks.

When a great crowd had gathered round
to see for themselves what miracles befell
twas time to return to my own town,
and at my command we were ready to sail.

Yet before my disciples entered the boat
a certain scribe bid to follow where I go
whereby I made him take watchful note,
that I carried no oar with which to row:

"Foxes have dens, & heavenly birds have roosts
but the son of man can lay his head no where"
this view into my life, I was obliged to share
for the moon listens to what a wise owl hoots.

He that follows me, the world's only light
will by no means walk in darkness
but will truly possess the lantern of life,
that wing's shadows cast by a Dove's flight.

Tis true of myself I bore witness
though there's a good reason for doing this
to show each and all that they might,
-not of my father's will, come to miss.

Not all accept where and who I came from
nor that towards there, I attempt to lead you
for they don't know what needs to be done,
and that I alone was sent to do.

But no one can see the Kingdom of God
- unless they become born again
and because I speak for him,
it is he whom you should laud.

Before sending my disciples forth
I gave them three powers for their faith
to cast off unclean spirits without escort,
with sickness & disease to share this fate.

But whomever seeks worldly profit in my name
shall not of me nor my father's home gain
from myself I gave freely to offer,
and asked this of my disciples the same.

- To take no gold, no silver, nor copper
as a filled purse is not of Heaven's coffer
If there would be one to receive them
though it may be but one in ten.

From whom I was sent will also nearby be,
because they too then are receiving of me
Think not that I came to bring peace
but tis a sharp sword I wield for division...
—so seek not the chalice nor golden fleece,
for man's peace has no common definition.

To question and challenge Authority
against his father, I pit the son's life
and a daughter against her mother, is to be
-as well as a mother-in-law and young wife.

Upon a mountain with Peter, James & John
my face appeared sunshine-glistening bright
and betwixt this moment not very long,
my garment had become a brilliant white.

Then unto me came Elias and Moses
to talk of their heartfelt sentiments
thereupon disciple Peter proposes,
to make three sacred tents.

But as my father spoke from a cloud
commending me while commanding these three
their fear used earth as a facial shroud,
until I bid them arise to come with me.

This summit vision that they saw
was by no man to be known
even thought they were held in awe,
from death first, I had to be shown.

When the Chief Priests, Scribes & Older men
asked by what authority I do what I do
I simply then asked of them,
to answer one question none of them knew:

Was the renowned baptism by John,
from Heaven or men during his day
- but since either would make them wrong,
I chose a third answer as my rite-of-way.

One might be born with a eunuch's touch
or be made a eunuch by other men
while a another may make themselves as such,
on account of the Kingdom of Heaven.

He that can make room for its place
let them make room for it at will
for when one attempts to gain God's grace,
they seek out the nearest-to-heaven hill.

Of the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven,
- my disciples asked of me to tell
yet it is them whom we know so well:
suffer each unto me, the little children.

—And forbid them not unto my presence
allowing each their own special witness
as my aura illuminates from their essence-
with so much more, and yet, humbly this...

"For in a child's heart there is truth
a sincerity that all must come to feel
or you'll not find Heaven's route,
as only in that truth is anything real".

Truth is not transitory
only is mankind's interpretation there-of
truth remains the same, eternally,
as does a sincere heart's love.

I often told my disciples I would tell them
then to tell them, I went ahead
after which I told of my telling again,
whereby a one-with-three was often said.

Tis only an evil and adulterous generation
which seeks a sign of who I am
but the prophet Jonas gave confirmation
that I alone am the son of man.

For as 3 days and nights came then went
with Jonas inside the belly of a whale
I too had three nights and days spent,
in the heart of an earthen well.

It hurt me deeply and I cried
when I heard that Lazarus had died
for he and his two sisters were loved so,
much more than others came to know.

Of the stone to his tomb's entrance-
I asked that it be removed
Yet Martha gave resistance,
h having forgot of God's glory to be proved.

I thanked my father for listening
though I knew he always heard clearly
but this was said without whispering,
to help others believe he sent me.

Then from within my chest came a shout
as I stood before each and all,
"Lazarus come out!"

- to which he did heed my call.

Thomas asked of me to tell
how can the way be known for my following
and since they knew not where I was going,
I left them a map of the very trail:

"For I am The Way, The Truth, & The Life
my father is reached only through me
like a vine whose fruit is ripe,
all that I am I give to thee".

Together in one group some Pharisees came,
to test me of the greatest commandment
as did the Sadducees, they sought the same,
to silence the one who was Heaven-sent.

My eyes bespoke an almost malicious grin
while I shook my head at hearts so blind
wondering how often must I tell them again,
to love God with a whole heart, soul & mind.

I called the Scribes & Pharisees hypocrites
for paying a tithe of mint, dill and cumin
but weightier matters of the law each omits
-overlooking Judgment, Mercy & Faith again.

Thus, righteous blood scarred their lives
and their temples's stones were tossed aside
when I sent Prophets, Wisemen & Scribes,
of whom some were killed and crucified.

When, while upon the Mount of Olives I sat
my disciples asked me 3 questions privately
about the temple not being left intact,
-also my coming's sign, & world's end to be.

Along with Peter came Zebedee's two sons
into a garden where my sorrow was shed
and why my lips, the same 3 prayers bled:
'no pain come all at once from one's lungs'.

My disciples heard me speak of farewell
so the Comforter's message could be done
of Sin, Righteousness & Judgment to tell,
and reveal of things yet to come.

"I am Not," is all that Peter would say
when asked if he is one of my disciples
his third denial came after I was led away,
before the moment a cock crows.

I was draped with a deep-red cloak,
and a crown of thorn's, by a soldier's deed
they thought to shame me with this joke,
after clasping my right hand with a reed.

Many think I dropped the cross three times
on the way to my crucifixion
and with two others found guilty of crimes,
that 3 of us had embarked towards Heaven.

It is believed that three nails were used
to bind each hand and both feet
- my executioners expected to be abused,
but with words like these I chose to speak:

"And though my flesh deeply pangs for water
while blood also trickles from each hand,
please forgive them oh Father
for they do not understand".

It was Pilate who inscribed above my head,

some say I said this simple phrase of three:
"I am thirsty"

One nearby, rushed up to me
with a sponge soaked in sour wine
but others around said "Let him be!",
to see if God would save me in time.

Then, an uncommon blackness filled the air
for time's memory was not to be failed
and though my words remain forever to share,
the Earth one day, shall itself be impaled.

Like three roots of a mighty tree
the crosses stood to brave death's axe
but when death had reached to me,
its handle broke at the task.

And thus like a fruit I fell away
as this alone was my Father's plan
for my soul was a seed that day,
to be planted in the heart of man.

When in with my father I went to be,
my disciples found themselves in me
upon which they realized I was in them too,
and will be in all those who to me are true.

It was on the third day that I rose
after having been crucified
and every kind-hearted person knows,
it was for each of you that I died.

Three women with spices sweet,
came to soothe their hearts by anointing me
but I had gone before them, to Galilee
for it is there we were to meet.

Mary Magdalene stood outside my tomb
weeping all the tears her heart would allow
seeing only two angels in this barren womb,
and they asked: 'woman, why weepest thou?'.

She said I had been taken away
knowing not where I was laid
then with silence alone she chose to pray,
- as she felt her love for me betrayed.

Mary then turned towards me
but supposed me only as a gardener
she supported her tears with the plea,
that I be given over unto her.

After I called to Mary by name
she answered me by saying: Master!
"Touch me not," I came to explain,
for I had not yet ascended to my father.

To my disciples behind shut doors,
I came twice to be heard
then near the sea of the Tiberieas shores,
meant this visit was my third.

Historical note: As I recall, I was unemployed while writing the Three Wise Men Poem back in 1983/1984. I had gone to a nearby University Library to research the New Testament information from various translations of the bible which were reviewed over several days. I wrote the full length version (333 lines including the title) in an attempt to be more comprehensive than what the information in the above short length version might suggest to some readers; namely, that the handful of "threes" portrayed in the short version were all that existed... This is clearly not the case. In addition, the impetus for the poem came from this encounter: I was walking by a church one day and came upon a Minister with whom I struck up a conversation about "threes". He said his preferance was for the number seven and that the Bible had multple examples in the Old Testament. I then made it a point to research the threes phenomena in the New Testament by culling together about 30 different texts to find references... some of which are part of cultural tradition and do not have an actual presence in the Bible such as the supposed three nails used to hang Jesus. The translations are but a sampling of the larger content. And no, I have no religious affiliation nor do I profess any particular religious belief. In other words, I am not a religious fanatic and am not claiming myself as a so-called "witness", though others have referenced me as such. And for those who haven't noticed, the "New Testament" is a later born emergence in which more "threes" occur. This suggests that the presence of "threes" has been increasing over time and is not only because there are more people using the value in their different interests. Earlier cultures used different quantitative patterns such as two and seven, as well as four and five, etc.., thus exhibiting a larger multiplicity and that the further we go into the future, there appears to be a conservation effect where the "three" is used in multiple variations... such as the triangle and "V-shaped" instances along with overlaps such as three circles, three triangles, three squares, etc...

Here's another reference to the "threes" in the life of Jesus:

The Story of Jesus is a Story of Threes
  • Three witnesses before His birth- the only persons specified in the New Testament who knew of His impending birth: Joseph, Mary, and Elisabeth.
  • Three months - Mary stayed with Elisabeth for three months during which Mary was in her first trimester with Jesus and Elisabeth was in her third trimester with John the Baptist. (Luke 1:56)
  • Three Signs of His Birth- three signs that would accompany Christ's birth; great lights in heaven, a day without a night, and a new star. (Helaman 14:3-5)
  • Three Circumstances of His Birthwere fulfilled as prophesied when Christ was born to a virgin, in Bethlehem, and among the poor.(Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2)
  • Three Circumstances of His Life - born with the poor, killed with the wicked, buried with the rich. (Isaiah 53:5)
  • Three Witness of His Messiahship - shepherds, the temple worker Simeon, and the prophetess Anna. (Luke 2)
  • Three Wise Men- Although the number is not specified in scripture, according to legend three wise men came from the east to worship the newborn Messiah. (Matthew 2)
  • Three gifts - wise men gave Christ three gifts; gold, frankincense, myrrh. (Matthew 2)
  • Three Days in the Temple- After visiting Jerusalem with His parents the boy Christ was missing until He was found after three days in the Temple. (Luke 2)
  • Three Temptations - Christ was tempted three times of the devil. (Matthew 4)
  • Three who Fasted -Christ was the third to fast for forty days and forty nights. The only other two to do the same were Moses and Elijah. These are the three who also were together on the Mount of Transfiguration.
  • Three attributes of His learning- He shall have the tongue of the learned, give His back to the smilers, and He shall not be confounded. (Isaiah 50)
  • Age Thirty - age Christ began His ministry.
  • Three Witnesses at Baptism - At Christ's baptismal three members of the Godhead were present. (Matthew 3)
  • Three-year ministry-years of Christ's ministry to the Jews. (D&C 138:25). No other person in all of history has created such an enormous impact on the history of the world. And it was during only three years that He accomplished His mission.
  • Age Thirty-three- Christ was crucified at age 33, which is the number three twice. This number gives double emphasis to the meaning of the number three.
  • Third Day- Christ performed his first miracle on the third day. (John 2:1)
  • Presidency of Three - Christ called Peter, James, and John to the presidency. (Matthew 17)
  • Three Questions - Christ asked Peter three times, "Lovest thou me?" (John 21)
  • Three Answers - Christ answers the question "Lovest thou me?" with, "Feed my sheep." (John 21)
  • Truth Three-Ways - Christ taught that it was by three things that truth is learned; eyes, ears, heart. (Matthew 13:15)
  • Three Questions- Pharisees and Sadducees try to entangle Christ with three questions. (Matthew 22).
  • Three receiving woes - Christ gave woes seven times to three saying, "woe unto you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites" (Matthew 23).
  • Three days with multitude- a multitude of people stayed with Christ three days while he taught them. (Matthew 15:32; Mark 8:2)
  • Three days to build the temple- Christ said He will build the temple in three days. (Matthew 26:61; 27:40,63; Mark 14:58;15:29; John 2:19-20)
  • Three Ascending Injunctions- taught by Christ; "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you" (Matthew 7:7).

Parables - His parables often used the number three:

  • Three destroying forces - Parable of the Man who Built upon a Rock- those who follow Christ's teachings are they who build upon a rock and are protected from three destroying forces; rain, floods, and winds. (Matthew 7:24-29)
  • Three types of men -Parable of the Good Samaritan identifies three examples of men; a Priest, a Levite, and a Samaritan. (Matthew 10:25-37)
  • Three kinds of ground - Parable of the Sower - (Matthew 13:18-23) There are:
  • Three kinds of bad ground ... wayside soil, stony places, among thorns
  • Three kinds of good ground ... producing 30, 60, or 100 fold
  • Three men who receive talents - Parable of Talents - the Lord gives talents to three men; one five, another two, and another one. (Matthew 25:14-30)
  • Parable of Three Measures of meal & leaven. (Matthew 13:33; Luke 13:21).
  • Parable of Three Loaves (Luke 11:5)
  • Three years that fig tree was barren - Parable of the Barren Fig Tree - the tree was barren three years, it was given one more year to produce fruit before being destroyed. (Luke 13:7)
  • Three servants killed - Parable of the Wicked Husbandman - who killed three servants who were sent before the Lord's son. (Luke 20)
  • Three on the Mount of Transfiguration - Christ meets with Moses & Elias making three for which Peter proposes that three tabernacles be created as a memorial. The three, Peter, James, and John were nearby at the time of transfiguration. (Matthew 17)
  • Christ spoke three times in plainness of his betrayal, trial, scourging death, and resurrection after three days.
  • Three Hundred Pence - price of oil used to anoint Christ's feet that Judas states could have been sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor. (Mark 14:5; John 12:5)
  • Thirty Pieces of Silver - Price for which Judas betrayed Christ. (Matthew 26-27)
  • Three Prayers in Gethsamane - Christ prayed three times during His great suffering in the Garden when He took upon Himself the burden of all sin for all mankind. (Matthew 26:44; Mark 14:41)
  • Peter denied Christ three times. (Matthew 26:34,75;Mark 14:30,72;Luke 22:34,61;John 13:38)
  • Christ brought before three judges - Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod (John 18-19)

    • Three hours of thunderings, lightnings, tempests, storm, and earthquakes at Christ's death in New World. (3 Nephi 8:19)

    Three Days after His death:

    • Three days in the tomb - Days that Christ's body was in the tomb as prophesied. (John 19;20)
    • Three days in the Spirit World - Days that Christ was in the Spirit World. (1 Peter 3:18-20)
    • Three days of Darkness in the New World. (3 Nephi 8)
    • Resurrection on third day - He arose the third day (John 19;20)

    Three Days after His Resurrection:

    • Three days wherein He showed Himself to His Apostles in the Old World. (John 21:14)

  • Baptism in the-name-of-three -Christ commanded Apostles to teach all nations baptizing them in the name of three, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. (Matthew 28:19)
  • Three Times a Voice - number of times that the voice of God the Father announces the arrival of Christ in the New World. It was not understood until the third time. (3 Nephi 11:5)
  • Three days - the number of days that Christ visits those of the New World. (3 Nephi 11-28)

  • Holy said three times - Nephi states three times that Christ is holy. (2 Nephi 31:5, 7).
  • Two or Three -Where two or three are gathered, Christ will be in the midst. (Matthew 18:20)
  • The Third Article of Faith reads, "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." This is the only one of the Thirteen Articles of Faith that deals specifically with Christ.
  • Handel's Messiah - The "Rejoicing" section is played three times--first by the trumpets, then by the horns, and the third time by the entire orchestra. This triumphal music enjoyed immediate success and ranks with the finest orchestral music of the eighteenth century.
  • Three are One - The gospels teach that the Father, the Word (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Ghost are one. (1 John 5:7).
  • Three Hours of Chastening - Christ chastens the brother of Jared for three hours for not having prayed for four years. (Ether 2)

For the sake of discussion, let us say that the "strangeness" Jesus' teaching methodology lay not so much on what he said, but how he said it. For analogy, his message was an advertisement for a new "product" that used a predominant three-patterned slogan as opposed to slogans relying on inconsistently patterned two-part (dichotomous/oppositional) expressions that were the commonality in his day. (In other words, a "three" perspective versus a "two" perspective.) The inconsistency can be equated with a commonplace multi-varied perceptual activity of a population which produced such things as (socially accepted) personal gods and demons, amongst various other personalized superstitions. Jesus' ministry was not devoid of similar schizophrenic-like indulgences (ambivalences), as particularly described in his comment:

Luke 12:51-

"Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law."

It is the same oppositional reaction one can see in a psycho-path upon thinking they have been pinned down in harboring a particular perspective that another might take advantage of through manipulation. This "two versus three" perspective is highlighted by the following image:

2 Roman dicers (4K) Roman dicers from a fresco at Pompeii, playing what is thought to be an early version of backgammon. The cartoon-like captions above their heads describe a disputed call: the man on the left cries, "I've won!" while the one on the right objects, claiming, "It's not a three, it's a two."

Analogously, the two characters can be viewed as the right & left hemispheres of the brain. The right adamantly refuses to acknowledge the left's claim to a 3 and insists that the "3" the left sees is actually a 2. If the overall purpose of the "game" (life) is to achieve a "3" and yet there is a claim from some for a preponderance of "2" (with all its various guises), do we try to change the rules of the "game" or create a teaching methodology which enables the distinctions of "2" and "3" to be made identifiable and useful from all vantage points? (Even if the purpose of the game is defined by Earth-specific environmental circumstances.) The social problems created by an underlying 2 versus 3 contention has been going on for long enough... since Pompeii anyway. Let's not leave a similar picture of us for future historians who find it beneath the rubble of an extinct civilization.

I describe the above two dicers as being analogous to the right and left hemisphere's of the brain, because when we look at the attributes of the brain's hemispheres: LEFT (for example, mathematics, logic, language) and RIGHT (for example, art, music, dance); these attributes can be seen to have underlying attributes. See the information near the bottom of the following page:

Upon greeting someone familiar, it is the custom in some cultures to:

  1. kiss one cheek
  2. then kiss the other cheek
  3. and then to kiss the first cheek again

On occasion, some greeters will forego the actual kiss and merely exercise an abbreviated version by moving their head from one side to the other side of the other person's head. If the two who are greeting have been in some conflict, they may use a two patterned form of the customary three-patterned greeting.

The people in Jesus' time where not aware of their usage of "twos" or his "threes". However, they were aware that there was something "different" about him, even if their perceptions could not be articulated beyond this vagueness. It is the same vagueness appearing today with respect to those viewing Crop Circles and UFO encounters as a "message." While various interpretations are being exchanged, and some level of commonality is being addressed, few of these believers have identified the recurring expression of three-patterned representations.

Whereas criminals use a predominant two-patterned focus, the rest of the population is using a three-patterned one that contains the old two-patterned perspective as well. Most people do not acknowledge these cognitive patterns. In Jesus' time, he was one who began using more "threes" than the rest of the population, and it is not certain he was aware of this difference or not. A predominant usage of "threes" in a population that used "twos" would have been quite overwhelming and interpreted to be "heaven sent" and that the person was doing the "will of God." It would be like an early tabulator of goods being overwhelmed at their ability to count higher than other bookkeepers. Their ability to do so would have appeared to be amazing, if not a gift or talent (from heaven). Likewise, if a modern day mathematician developed a whole new form of mathematics, many of us would be amazed, even if we didn't understand it. They, perhaps humbly, or not, might well interpret their ability as a mark of genius. If they were religiously oriented, they might well interpret it as a gift from God that they should share with others.
