3 Charlie's angels (9K)

3 to 1 ratio occurrences involving 3 women and 1 dominant male figure:

3 Angels (image to the right) and 1 unseen Charlie (1970s USA "Charlie's Angels" television series) also contained a visible male that acted as a go-between them and Charlie, that seems symbolic of a priest as a go-between for God. The actresses and actors, from top to bottom are: Kate Jackson, David Doyle, Farrah Fawcett (seated to Doyle's left), Jaclyn Smith.

  • 3 Witches (Cher, Susan Saradon, and Michelle Pfeiffer)of EastWick and 1 Devil (Jack Nicholson) [A movie made from a novel by John Updike]. (See image below)

  • 3 Witches and 1 Macbeth.

  1. Tarzan- adult male human
  2. Jane- adult female human
  3. Boy- male human child
  4. Cheetah- male (?) adult chimpanzee

3 men and 1 woman are typical dominant characters played in many Hollywood-styled westerns. For example, the woman may be the daughter, wife, mother, sister, of one of the male characters, with the other two male characters playing separate roles as the dominant good guy and the dominant bad guy. In some variations, there is one dominant male pitted against another dominant male, with a secondary dominant male playing the role as a drifter, son, or worker, with the dominant female playing in any number of roles such as saloon girl, banker's daughter, store keeper's wife, or some other such prominent female incorporated into the story. In many westerns, there is the good guy, the bad guy, and the sheriff, with the prominent female again playing any number of roles (or group of females represented by a single dominant female).

Prior to the 3 Charlie's Angels grouping illustrated above, there was a 1970's Cop show entitled "The Rookies" in the U.S. which featured 3 men and 1 one female. The female (Kate Jackson) played the role of one of the police officers' wife and later became one of the Charlie's Angels group. The story centers upon the training of three young rookie cops, played by Michael Ontkean, Georg Stanford Brown and Sam Melville.

For further metaphorical analogy using a sexual intimation:

They were 3 female named ships that Christopher Columbus (and others) "rode on the undulating waves to the (development of a) birth of a New World."

  • The image to the right depicts 3 men and 1 woman of the television show "Sliders." From top to bottom the actors are: Jerry O’Connell, Cleavant Derricks, Sabrina Lloyd, John Ryhs-Davies.

Additional 3 to 1 variations:

  • Myth of Paris: Paris needs to choose the most beautiful from among 3 goddesses; his choice falls upon the third, Aphrodite, the goddess of love.
  • Cinderella: In this fairy tale the youngest daughter, who is constantly punished at home, is the one of three who is preferred by the Prince.

Because her beauty attracts the attention of all humans, the goddess Venus becomes jealous and decides to punish her. But Cupid, Venus's son, falls in love with Psyche and ultimately rescues her. (From another perspective, she is the third born.)
  • Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: The situation in which Bassanio and two other suitors are forced to choose between three caskets to win Portia as a bride by testing their values:

  1. Prince of Morocco chooses the gold casket.

  2. Prince of Aragon chooses the silver casket.

3 women and 1 (assumed) man [God]:

During a siege in which Mohammed and about 50 of his followers were being starved into submission in a Meccan neighborhood, under pressure from his followers to do something, he provided a revelation: Along with Allah, the three chief Meccan goddesses (Al-Lat, Al-Manat, and Al-Uzza) were acknowledged by Mohammed (who later claimed this vision was a revelation inspired by the Devil). {H.O.B.: perhaps we should spell "Allah" as "Al-Lah"? It reminds me of the slang way of expressing "All You": All Yah}

3 (men) to 1 (woman) ratio on the old Wild Wild West television series:

During the first few minutes of the program there was a caption illustration a 5-box configuration of a man walking in the middle (we come to assume that it's the good guy):

  1. 1 of 3. a bank (seen at the viewer's lower left) with a man exiting it while walking backwards carrying a gun that the good guy knocks down with a karate chop.
  2. 2 of 3. a pair of boots (upper right visual field) with an Ace of diamonds playing card affixed to the left boot that a hand reaches down for but the good guy pulls his gun on and the card floats downward.
  3. 3 of 3. a pistol (upper left visual field) that is grabbed by a hand that points the gun towards the good guy, making him drop his gun but that he pulls out a derringer and shoots the would-be assailant.
  4. 1 of 1. a smartly dressed woman (lower right visual field) who tips the good guy's hat with her umbrella and as he begins kissing her she produces a knife to stab him in the back whereby he slugs her to the ground.

3 to 1 ratio of UFO photographs taken by Rex Heflin on August 3rd, 1965: Three are said to be genuine but the forth has received some skepticism because it has a dark ring behind it as it vanishes behind a cloud. Perhaps it needs a tune-up because the dark ring suggests either oil burning or too rich a gas/air carburetor mixture?

The old saying: Rich man, Poor man, Beggar man, Thief:

  1. 1 of 3 is the poor man.
  2. 2 of 3 is the beggar man.
  3. 3 of 3 is the thief.
  4. The 1 of 1 is the rich man.

The other 3 to 1 in this sequence can be seen in that three are described as being men, while the "thief" has no gender status. (The Poor, The Beggar and The Thief can be viewed as sharing a single economic niche, while The Rich, have a separate niched. Some readers might argue that not all thieves are poor, and some might even provide arguments as to the definition of "poor" being different for various cultures.)

I should mention that in receiving four bus tokens from the homeless division at the VA hospital per week, it takes one of the tokens to get to and from the hospital. Thus, this is a 3 to 1 ratio. (When it was discovered that some of the Veterans were selling the tokens for cash, the number of tokens was reduced. The usage of tokens is now dictated by a verification of a medical appointment. The problem with this setup is that the VA Homeless Center may be in an area where there is no bus service or it is at a distance requiring the use of a bus, whereby the Veteran must use more than the allotted one or two tokens to get to the Center in order to get tokens that are needed to get to the Doctor's appointment! Many of the Veterans I spoke with recognize the Center as just another bureaucracy that receives thousands of dollars to pay the salaries of those who don't actually assist most homeless veterans.)

3 to 1 ratio in the Life of Buddha:

According to traditional accounts, the Buddha was born a prince named Siddhartha Gautama in a small kingdom in what is today southern Nepal. His final incarnation was a culmination of a training program that spanned countless lifetimes, during which he gradually perfected the exalted qualities that would mark him as a Buddha. Shortly after his birth, his father consulted a number of astrologers, all of whom declared that the newborn prince would become a great king and that he would rule the whole world with truth and righteousness. One astrologer, however, declared that if the prince were to see a sick person, an old person, a corpse, and a world-renouncing ascetic, he would become dissatisfied with his life and become a wandering mendicant in order to seek final peace. These four things became known in Buddhism as the "four sights." The first three epitomize the problems inherent in the world, while the fourth points to the way out of the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, which is characterized by suffering and loss.

3 to 1 expression by Martin Luther King Jr. in one of his civil rights speeches:

Free at Last, Free at Last, Thank God almighty, Free at Last.

  1. 1 of 3: April
  2. 2 of 3: May
  3. 3 of 3: June

ironside cast (70K)

3 men to 1 woman arrangement of the old Ironside television series:

  1. 1 of 3: Raymond Burr as Chief Robert T. Ironside (in a wheelchair)
  2. 2 of 3: Don Galloway as Detective Ed Brown
  3. 3 of 3: Don Mitchell as Mark Sanger (Chief Ironside's assistant and driver.)

  2. 2 of 3. Richard Chaves as Lt. Col. Paul Ironhorse
  3. 3 of 3. Philip Akin as Norton Drake (in a wheelchair)
  4. 1 of 1. Lynda Mason Green as Dr. Suzanne McCullough

We could also include the 3 to l ratio of 3 white people to 1 black. (Philip Akin is black. And yes, if it were known, we might make other types of 3 to 1 ratio examples.)

In the Walt Disney movie entitled "The Lost Stallions," there are 3 boys and 1 girl (along with her dog, like the setup in the wizard of oz). I couldn't watch this movie because it focused too much on an interest in immature puerile observations and activities that typically make most kids their age find other topics of discussion to be concerned with.

In a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Miami television episode (that I had watched on a DVD but can't recall the episode name or number), it was mentioned that the U.S. paper money consists of 3/4ths cotton and 1/4th linen. (a 3 to 1 ratio). Whether or not information provided in television, radio or motion picture productions is true, the examples given are nonetheless valid.

ttunnel (76K)

3 to 1 character arrangement in the old "Time Tunnel" television series:

  1. 1 of 3 men (working at the main control console): Whit Bissell - Lt. General Heywood Kirk
  2. 2 of 3 men: John Zaremba - Dr. Raymond Swain
  3. 3 of 3 men: Sam Groom - Jerry (assistant technician)
  4. 1 of 1 woman: Lee Meriwether - Dr. Ann MacGregor

ttjerry (31K)

Jerry was not portrayed in all episodes and I could not find a picture which included him with the other main cast members, but I did come across a single one of him alone.

We can break down the overall time tunnel cast into three categories:

  1. The major control console characters mentioned above.
  2. The minor technicians and security personnel seen in the background.
  3. The two time tunnel travelers (played by James Darren as Dr. Tony Newman above left and Robert Colbert as Dr. Douglas Phillips above right) and the characters they encountered in their time travels.

3 to 1 character arrangement in the old "Journey to the Center of the Earth" movie:

  3. 3 of 3 men: Hans Belker played by Peter Ronson
  4. 1 of 1 woman: Carla Göteborg played by Arlene Dahl

(We could include the Goose Gertrude but we're not including animals.)

We could also include three additional men: Mr. Göteborg who died before the expedition began. As well as Count Saknussem and his man-servant, but they also eventually died.

Main 3 to 1 Stargate Atlantis group who survey/explore/investigate new planets:

  3. 3 of 3 men: Teal'c played by Christopher Judge (lower middle)
  4. 1 of 1 woman: Lt. Colonel Carter played by Amanda Tapping [upper left] (and there is sometimes the presence of another woman... [Claudia Black...upper right] who may or may not accompany the team at the same time as Carter. Other female characters may also appear separately or together.)

There is a 3 to 1 triangle reference made in a 10th season episode of Stargate SG1 when the SG1 team were trying to locate an assumed weapon created by Merlin that would destroy the ORI. (I forget the title of the episode.)

There is a 3 to 1 arrangement of characters in the old 1957 movie entitled "Sea Wife" with:
