Bananna with 3 peels overlapped

3-peels are frequently pulled down by those peeling a banana typically found and bought in U.S. grocery stores. As the banana ripens, it may be peeled with more than three. However, while working in the nearby prison and county jail, I witnessed some pacific islanders complain that nobody (but them) knows how to peel a banana, which they say should be peeled with one's mouth at the opposite end of the stem. This is the same behavior that can be witnessed at any zoo by standing near the caged primates, though bananas are commonly cut into portions before being served to the monkeys.

3 on a tree is an old expression referring to the 3-speed shifting lever that typically came on a vehicle's steering column in the 1950s through 1960s found in the U.S., before design improvements in the automatic transmission.

3 major types of geologic faults:

  1. Normal faulting- is associated with crustal extension, and so can be found at divergent boundaries.
  2. Reverse faulting- is associated with crustal shortening, and so can be found at convergent boundaries.
  3. Strike-slip faulting- is associated with lateral motion of the crust, and so can be found at transform boundaries.

3 types of Economy:

  1. Cash-for-Profit Economy- The primary characteristic of the cash-for-profit economy is an exchange of cash for goods or services. A variation of this theme involves barter instead of cash.

  2. Cash Charity Economy- The primary characteristic of a cash charity economy is that a contribution of cash is made in exchange for assurance that the contribution supports a project which is worthy. As with the "cash-for-profit" economy, this system can be based on "barter" via contributions in kind.

  3. Labor Charity Economy- The primary characteristic of a labor charity economy is the contribution of labor in exchange for a sense of satisfaction, either because the work is enjoyable or because it achieves desirable ends, or both.

3-dimensional model of Quality from a 1~ 2~ 3 developmental sequence:

One Dimensional Quality Model

In the late 1970s Dr. Noriaki Kano of Tokyo Rika University further refined the notion of quality derived partially from his study of: Herzberg's

"Motivator-Hygiene Theory."

Many of the previous definitions of quality were linear and ONE dimensional in nature, i.e.,

good or bad,
small versus large loss to society.

Two Dimensional Quality Model

Dr. Kano integrated quality along TWO dimensions. The two dimensions were:

1. The degree to which a product or service performs and

2. The degree to which the user is satisfied.

Kano's 3-dimensional Model

The juxtaposing of the quality parameters of performance and user satisfaction in a two axis plot created the ability to define quality in a more sophisticated and holistic manner.

The correlation of quality on two axes led Dr. Kano to THREE unique definitions of quality, namely:

(1) Basic Quality,
(2) Performance Quality and
(3) Excitement Quality.

3 types of transmission cycle for yellow fever (Sylvatic ~ Intermediate ~ Urban):

  1. Sylvatic (or jungle) yellow fever- In tropical rainforests, yellow fever occurs in monkeys that are infected by wild mosquitoes. The infected monkeys can then pass the virus onto other mosquitoes that feed on them. These infected wild mosquitoes bite humans entering the forest resulting in sporadic cases of yellow fever.

  2. Intermediate yellow fever- In humid or semi- humid savannahs of Africa, small-scale epidemics occur in villages. (Semi-domestic mosquitoes infect both monkey and human hosts.)

  3. Urban yellow fever- Large epidemics can occur when migrants introduce the virus into areas with high human population density. Domestic mosquitoes of one species, Aedes aegypti carry the virus from person to person; no monkeys are involved in transmission.

3 types of interactions between infections and chronic diseases are known to occur.

  1. Infections, including periodontal disease- increase the risk for chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

  2. Chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis - increase the risk for the development and progression of a localized infection such as periodontal disease.

  3. Both infections and chronic disease- can affect each other. For example, diabetes mellitus is not only a risk factor for periodontal infection, but also periodontal infections in diabetics can decrease metabolic control, worsening the diabetic state.

Helium-3 Study of Pacific Ocean Circulation:

Helium-3 ocean study

Hydrothermal activity along the global mid-ocean ridge system and on certain seamounts releases plumes of 3He-rich water into the ocean. These helium plumes can be traced for thousands of kilometers from the source, thereby defining the patterns of ocean circulation.

3 to 1 ratio of project:

    One Goal...

  1. 1 of 1-To define patterns of Pacific Ocean circulation using the distribution of hydrothermal 3He.

  2. Three Accomplishments...

  3. 1 of 3- 3-d helium distribution mapped throughout the Pacific basin via NOAA and WOCE expeditions.

  4. 2 of 3- Helium plumes clearly define circulation pattern in certain regions.

  5. 3 of 3- Good comparison between helium distribution and other descriptions of Pacific circulation.

Three-patterned calls for double play in baseball by announcers:

Each position on a baseball team is given a number for the purpose of keeping score...

  • Pitcher = 1
  • Catcher = 2
  • First baseman = 3
  • Second baseman = 4
  • Third baseman = 5
  • Shortstop = 6
  • Left-fielder = 7
  • Center-fielder = 8
  • Right-fielder = 9

A (three-patterned) 6 - 4 - 3 double play means the ball was fielded by the short-stop (6), who tossed to the second baseman (4) for one out, who then fired to the first baseman (3) for the second out.
