A Study of the Threes Phenomena

If right look at the brain with a bird's eye view (top down), you will see that it juts out forward a bit more on the right hemisphere portion than the left hemisphere. However, you have to look elsewhere (The right brain hemisphere is dominant in human infants) in order to grasp that it leads the way in brain development functionality. When we thus turn our attention to those views which describe specific (and sometimes overlapping) behavioral attributes) assigned to one or the other side of the brain such as: (Parts of the Brain and Their Functions, though there are multiple other references to be found. Generally, we find the following assignment of characteristics dealing with specialized cognitive functions:
- Left Hemisphere: Often called the ‘logical’ side of the brain, the left hemisphere is dominant in language processing, reading,
writing, mathematical reasoning, and sequential problem-solving. It plays a key role in grammar, syntax, and analytical thinking,
(summed up as):
- Communicate.
- Strategize and solve problems.
- Memorize.
- Analyze.
- Right Hemisphere: Known as the ‘intuitive’ side, the right hemisphere specializes in spatial awareness, creativity, recognizing faces, interpreting emotions, and visualizing patterns. It is more involved in music and artistic abilities, (summed up as::
- Creativity.
- Intuition.
- Emotional response.
- Imagination.
For those readers like myself who like images/imagery, an illustration (edited for my use here) from Dean Falk's Brain Dance, will be of value:

However, typically, most readers leave the information as they find it, whether you like the idea or not. Not only did I choose to look a bit more closely at the attributes using values of enumeration, but I included the distinction of contralateral connectivity with respect to someone having had a stroke. In short, a stroke in the left hemisphere affects the right side of the body and a stroke in the right hemisphere affects the left side. This is important, because we can also (more easily) identify a basic "2- 3" distinction:
The left side of the body houses a 2-lobed lung and a Bi-cuspic (mitral) valve, whereas the right side of the body houses a 3-lobed lung and Tri-Cuspid heart valve. With the prefix "Bi" referring to the value "2" and the prefix "Tri" referencing the value "3". These values are all the more remarkable when upon looking more closely to the underlying cognitive patters of the hemisphere distinctions, we can recognize that they too follow a two versus three valuation. And yes, we can see qualities with each of them overlapping, but retaining a dominant underlying theme of either being two or three-pattern oriented.

For example, while most of us are taught to view Mathematics as being an exercise of logic, an examination of it reveals it is dependent on right-brain two-patterned associations, though in several instances we can see what are thought to be 3-patterned ideas such as Trigonometry and Boolean Logic applied to the binary code of computers, in the 3-patterned formula of AND, OR, NOT gates. Similarly in Art along with its two-patterned contrast idea, we find the view of three dimensional portrayals. Clearly then, we are paying witness to a progressive developmental trend involving distinctions between a 2- and 3-patterned developmental exercise. However, at this point in our discovery most readers would not then look more closely at development biology to note that not only are amino acids paired, but a pattern-of-three is required for the more complex development in terms of a triplet DNA code and the use of 3 Germ layers for animal development. No less, though we recognized the 2-patterned (binary) switching of the presently used electrical circuit, many people are not aware that there are 3 families of fundamental particles and those involved with the development of a Quantum computer, are searching for a trinary/ternary computer code application, and not just another 3-patterned (Boolean logic) embellishment of the presently used binary coded computer systems used widely today.
While we say that Mathematics is logic and force everyone to be at least introduced towards it in public school, many a politician would describe their efforts more in terms of being an artist with a particular type of imagery being used. Mathematics is clearly an art form just as art is a form of mathematics, often involving the perspective(s) of geometry and personalized calculus, with a measure of the Pythagorean theorem showing itself in a model such as Rule of thirds in art, photography, and multiple other interests that may not routinely be described as an Art form, though they are. Even though many people don't like the word "rule" and prefer guideline, suggestion, principle, or some other label which does convey the notion of limitation in one's creative endeavors. And though it is thought that one's imagination should not be limited, in reality it appears that human imagination, creativity, genius, insight, originality, etc., are in fact not only limitations constrained by words and definitions as well as application, but by our physiology on an incrementally deteriorating planetary system for which we adapt multiple constraints of action and thought as a survival mechanism on this 3rd planet.
If by associating the numbers 1-2-3 to the hemisphere attributes is to be viewed in terms of developmental relevance, let me portray a segment of sequential logical inference from basic biology taken from the After Every Third, page 2:
- 3 shapes to the Universe. (flat without curvature), (spherical or closed), (saddle-shaped/hyperbolic or open)
- 3 general shapes to galaxies: spiral- elliptical- irregular

- 3 Moon formation ideas: fission- sister- capture
- 3 laws of motion by Sir Isacc Newton.
- 3 laws of planetary motion. by Johannes Kepler
- 3 Laws of Thermodynamics (zeroth law is foundation for the other 3, signifying a 3 -to- 1 ratio)
- 3 degrees Kelvin is the approximate temperature of outer space.
- Human brain weighs approximately 3 pounds.
- Typical door nob hole is drilled 3 feet off the floor
- 3 matter forms on Earth: solids- liquids- gases
- 3rd planet sports life. (Earth)
- RNA world: single stranded with a triplet code
- DNA world: double stranded with a triplet code
- Protein world: triple conformation (e.g. collagen)
- 3 domains of life hypothesis: Bacteria- Archaea- Eukaryote
- 3 Germ layers expressing developmental complexity: Ectoderm- Mesoderm- Ectoderm

After every 3rd event we can see the beginnings of another 3-part sequence in some instances. However, like biology, the sequence may not always follow through and there may be reversals, digression, fits and starts, deletions, fusiona, (etc...) including attempted excursions into some semblance of what you might describe as a 4th provision, though the idea of a 3 -to- one ratio provides a different perspective. Hence, the idea of a 1-2-3 maturational development sequence need not always be complete or an exercise singular model without replication, modification, truncation, overlap, be camouflaged, with or without multiplication or other arithmetical tools, noe without reflection, refraction, diffraction, distortion, or otherwise.
Now that the idea of a 1-2-3 developmental scenario is acknowledged as an occurrence, let us state it as a dominant recurrence and not as a requirement. Pointing out what is thought to be an anomaly, that is... not abiding by what someone thinks a 1-2-3 sequence should look or act like, does not automatically throw a wrench into the working idea, though some may think so because they preferentially look for other patterns in line with their established orientations which often feature some "two" idea or some multiple thereof. For example, some one may offer the value of "7" in terms of 1+6, 2+5, or 3+4. From which we can deduce 3 sets of two numbers yielding 7... though only the "7" becomes the preoccupation, due in part to its association with antiquity including religion's orientations influenced by early astronomer's perspectives involving at least three ideas:.
- 7 stars of the Big and Little Dippers
- Seen during the 2 Solstices and 2 Equinoxes, the Big Dipper becomes the Swastika
- 7 stars of the Pleiades (also called the seven sisters)
- 7 planets ("wanderers") visible without a telescope: Mercury, Venus, Moon, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
Once such a numerical pattern as "7" was identified occurring in the stars which was viewed as the abode of the "Heaves", early religious leaders attributed the number as representing something sacred, and thus sought out other instances of the pattern, including creating multiple examples from their own imagination.
Once the rationale (whether or not you prefer the word "rationalization") is cemented in your perspective as a possibility, I need to move forward and introduce you to the associated idea that if we have a "2- and 3" provision, a possible candidate for the "1" spot in descending developmental order would be the reptilian or limibic system of basic brain functionality. Hence, we have a 3-patterened sequence of brain development labeled the Reptilian- Old mammalian- Mew mammalian, corresponding to the limbic- right hemisphere- left hemisphere. Yet, if we look along the course of brain development in different species, we see an astonishing recurrence of a three-pattern:

Identifying a recurrence of patterns-of-three is a rudimentary model of acknowledging the presence of both a cardinal (quantitative: one- two- three items value) but a qualitative (lst, 2nd, 3rd sequential) one as well. It is in essence, the establishment of a new arithmetical numbering system out of which can be developed a higher mathematics with respect to human cognitive development. Every single advanced system of using numbers required a rudimentary system of counting and association. It doesn't matter if you have a brain/mind capable of visualizing complex forms, you need a basic foundation from which to stand on and grow. Because the present model(s) of advanced Mathematics rely on a system of duality, just imagine how a system of trichotomy might provide for us!
Let's now take a look at the attributes of the brain hemispheres in terms of identifying the 2- and 3-patterned organizational themes, with the "1" pattern related to me, myself and I in terms of the self-preservation a reptilian brain would be most comfortable with:

With respect to transitional occurrences between the left and right hemispheres, I have placed some illustrations from a school yard playground indicating both overlap and a to-and-fro momentum which can occur... but no absolute "3" pattern seems to be sustained in terms of not (at times) sliding back from a 3 to a 2 state of orientation.

When we evaluate the unique characteristics of the two cerebral hemispheres and how they process information differently, it seems obvious that they would manifest unique value systems that would consequently result in very different personalities. Some of us have nurtured both of our characters and are really good at utilizing the skills and personalities of both sides of our brain, allowing them to support, influence, and temper one another as we live our lives. Others of us, however, are quite unilateral in our thinking either exhibiting extremely rigid thinking patterns that are analytically critical (extreme left brain), or we seldom connect to a common reality and spend most of our time "with our head in the clouds" (extreme right brain). Creating a healthy balance between our two characters enables us the ability to remain cognitively flexible enough to welcome change (right hemisphere), and yet remain concrete enough to stay a path (left hemisphere). Learning to value and utilize all of our cognitive gifts opens our lives up to the masterpiece of life we truly are. Imagine the compassionate world we could create if we set our minds to it.
