Romeo and Juliet: Binary thinking

Or let us entitle this page Antony and Cleopatra, Tristan and Isolde (Iseult, etc.), Adam and Eve, Lancelot & Guinevere, etc., as examples of binary thinking that becomes a projected orientation pervasive in Indo-European cultures, though other cultures may use their own references if they do not have an established philosophy (such as Yin- Yang) or religion (such as Devil- God/good- evil) which plays a dominant role in one's social orientation and collective intellectual consummation. And yet we must indulge a momentary digression from a discussion of the binary in order to point out a monary attempting to portray itself as a trinary though the outward appearance gives the indication of a binary in the form of an non-traditional couple.

Here's a list of alternative two-patterned relationships: → Patterns of Two

Narcissus (84K)

Mythology, whether you believe in a particular story or not, outlines particular patterns of emotion and thought that some people come to appreciate and are able to apply to various observations of the human condition... though some attempt to do so to any animate or inanimate inter-relation. Binary formulas have received different names such as duality, opposition, dichotomy, binomial, biannual, bilateral, couple, lovers, marriage, engagement, etc..., including variations involving singularity which reference a previous binary situation such as widow, widower, divorced, divorcee, etc... However, it is rather humorous that we find some individuals thinking that their sexual orientation is best described as a trinary by referring to themselves and others of their ilk as a third gender. Whereas homosexuals pair up, their actual motivations for doing so may be linked to a variety of causal factors involving psychological predispositions such as narcissism, social rebellion, manipulation of vulnerabilities, etc..., that actually represent a singularity. They can't move beyond a preoccupation with their own sexuality... thus the "self" orientation is a regression to a monism and not a binary.

The term "Narcissism", or self-love, comes from the mythology of a character called Narcissus who fell in love with himself after seeing his reflection in some water. This character portrayal has led many to view homosexuality in terms of someone loving themselves in a projected means of attachment to someone of their own gender to the extent of establishing a sexual relationship. Such a relationship is neither binary nor trinary. It is not an advancement in the human psyche, but a regression to a form of infantile self-absorption like a replay of oral, anal, and genital stages of self-discovery. Similarly, instead of a "One God" orientation that disguises a multiplicity of beliefs... therefore revealing humanity has not actually developed a "universal" (humanity-wide) monotheistic concept; a homo/self-sexual orientation is an alternative "oneness of self" perspective brought on by the pressures sensitive people are subjected to. While this is not to say that all homosexuals are sensitive individuals since there are no doubt sexual perverts taking advantage of others vulnerabilities; those who actually are (and not merely convinced) they are particularly sensitive to environmental/social pressures (circumstances), are practicing a monism and not a binary nor trinary orientation.

in Greek mythology, the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. He was distinguished for his beauty. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book III, Narcissus's mother was told by the blind seer Tiresias that he would have a long life, provided he never recognized himself. His rejection, however, of the love of the nymph Echo or (in an earlier version) of the young man Ameinias drew upon him the vengeance of the gods. He fell in love with his own reflection in the waters of a spring and pined away (or killed himself); the flower that bears his name sprang up where he died. The Greek traveler and geographer Pausanias, in Description of Greece, Book IX, said it was more likely that Narcissus, to console himself for the death of his beloved twin sister, his exact counterpart, sat gazing into the spring to recall her features.

The story may have derived from the ancient Greek superstition that it was unlucky or even fatal to see one's own reflection. Narcissus was a very popular subject in Roman art. In Freudian psychiatry and psychoanalysis, the term narcissism denotes an excessive degree of self-esteem or self-involvement, a condition that is usually a form of emotional immaturity.

While some homosexuals may think of themselves as a Romeo and Juliet who are forced to endure external negative social pressures; what we witness is the occasion of a false-positive... in that as a couple homosexuals may appear as a binary, but they are actually participating in an echo. Like the galvanic response of a dentist's examination tool in the mouth of an individual whose chemistry (and perhaps dentures) contribute to creating the environment that enables an electric shock to be felt. If a person rinses out their mouth, the occasion may not take place again and both the patient and dentist shrug of the instance as an anomaly. Homosexuality is an anomaly, in that basic biology requires the fecundity of a male and female in order to perpetuate the species. But homosexuals, in their presumed inimitable wisdom, think their relationship is more purposeful and mature because it permits two to be together for purer reasons that supersede "mere" procreation. And because their relationship expresses some assumed greater quality of intimacy beyond the "mere" animalism of birthing children, their relationship is interpreted to be equal to or even better than the traditional practice. But regardless of how a homosexual may interpret, may rationalize their orientation, it still revolves around their sexuality. This is why the term "homo-sexuality" remains, even though some try to turn to other words such as lesbianism, partner, etc... The preoccupation with their sexuality makes any and all of their relationships exceptionally crude and immature... the very opposite they presumed themselves to achieve.

Yet, with respect to "normal" boy/girl, man/woman relationships as expressions of a binary orientation, there are "his and her" circumstances which reflect the practice of a type of homo-sexual orientation. In situations where both the man and woman or boy and girl begin to expect the other to wear an identical coat, shirt, or eat/drink similarly, or hold the same beliefs... this is an indication that the binary has begun to reflect a monism or "monary". Whereas some claim that "opposites attract", then why do some couples interfere with this attraction by trying to mold their opposite into a reflection of themselves? Granted that some couples will playfully mimic one or another behavior of their opposite, and in no way resemble an interest to see themselves in their partner. Romeo and Juliet binary (52K) However, the usage of the phrase one's "better half" does give an expression of a couple viewing themselves as ONE, though they may describe it as a blending, a molding, an inter-twined mixture making each of them whole... or a steamy circumstance by mixing heat or flame with water or sweet wine.

When Romeo and Juliet took their own lives based on the false presumption that the other had met their death, they went from an initial binary couple and followed a path towards the similarity of a singularity. They joined one another in death. Yet, the living have used their story, or some other relationship binary, around which to orient themselves in a like-mindedness. If not in a relationship of their own, then as a metaphor for some abstract consideration in chemistry, mathematics, sociology or some other philosophical consideration. The phrase "Romeo and Juliet" is the recognition of a binary though this may not be a conscious acknowledgement. While some may see this same pattern in other human relationships, they do not necessarily carry it over as a formula to be used as an example of human cognitive processes. Like homosexuals obsessed with their sexuality, most people remain obsessed with making references to human conditions. It is yet another formula of binary thinking which become entrenched as an urban legend of what is appropriate pattern recognition.

Whereas famous couples abound, typically involving some conflict, many non-famous couples are more prevalent... both with and without situational conflicts. Very often, the couples assign themselves to a reality in which they think they are in a position where one or more others are trying to entrap them... to catch them in some act which will then enable the couple to be "logically" separated (a situation found in many logic circuits). But this and associated patterns remain from generation to generation, despite attempts by a few (like some homosexuals) who suggest their perspective has broken the mold of tradition and are an (over-valued) exception. The binary pattern of Romeo and Juliet is sometimes referred to as an archetype:

(From Greek archetypos, “original pattern”), in literary criticism, a primordial image, character, or pattern of circumstances that recurs throughout literature and thought consistently enough to be considered a universal concept or situation.

The term was adopted and popularized by literary critics from the writings of the psychologist Carl Jung, who formulated a theory of a “collective unconscious.” For Jung, the varieties of human experience have somehow been genetically coded and transferred to successive generations. These primordial image patterns and situations evoke startlingly similar feelings in both reader and author. The Canadian literary critic and theorist Northrop Frye was influential in extending the use of the term archetype to specifically literary contexts. Archetypal criticism has been connected with another group of thinkers more closely allied to its Jungian roots, including Maud Bodkin and James Hillman.

(Collective Unconscious is a) term introduced by psychiatrist Carl Jung to represent a form of the unconscious (that part of the mind containing memories and impulses of which the individual is not aware) common to mankind as a whole and originating in the inherited structure of the brain. It is distinct from the personal unconscious, which arises from the experience of the individual. According to Jung, the collective unconscious contains archetypes, or universal primordial images and ideas.

Whether you are one who looks upon arrangements of atomic particles and molecules in terms of human relationships (microcosm to macrocosm), or take human relationships and view them in terms of atomic particle and molecular activity (macrocosm to microcosm); these are binary exercises. And before the reader becomes overwhelmed with such a consideration, you must note that you can not expect a fledgling trinary perspective to compete with an already developed binary one. Don't place yourself in a binary tug-of-war between a trinary and binary perspective. The transition of development towards a trinary (and 3 to 1) is underway. While some binary models will become trinary in form and/or function, you should not expect all of them to. A "trinary" model of human evolution may not occur until we begin to actively alter our genetics... and it will happen. People will want the opportunity to place their brain in a new body of their choosing. The current Narcissism of loving oneself as they were born, will hold no sway... even when some try to apply various religious interpretations to forbid it. Yet, the obsessions of being the prettiest, strongest, tallest, fastest, smartest etc., will eventually be recognized for the singularities they are. Humanity will truly begin to move beyond the binary orientations so prevalent in the so-called collective unconscious as a type of coded law we are bound to live by.

If the usage of a binary code in computers is a reflection of a Romeo and Juliet archetype, will an alteration in the code of computers alter the archetype structure of the collective unconscious... like a student surpassing the skills of the master? If those involved in writing binary code begin to develop a trinary code with which a new industry follows suit, will the industry force the public to adopt its perspective if the industry is like a vine that winds its way into every commercial and social enterprise? If a trinary relationship has nothing to do with adultery or threesomes where a third person is knowingly or unknowingly involved, then what will a person do if they find out that such forms of triple thinking are actually part of a binary past that persists in trying to maintain a dominance? What happens to those segments of population whose psyche is dominated by a binary orientation but the majority is moving into a trinary perspective? Shall we create another binary formula of binary/trinary with separate laws? And what about all the binary developed laws being applied to those with a trinary orientation? Will those with a binary standard perception insist there is no difference while those with a developing trinary standard say otherwise?

If a binary standard is used as the measurement of sanity, of normalcy, than a developing trinary standard may well be viewed as an anomaly, unless the person who thinks in such a way can present it in a fashion that binary standard thinkers can come to appreciate the differences, and not merely attempt to incorporate a trinary perspective into a binary framework as a type of personally applied reductionist philosophy where the binary and its multiples are perceived as the dominant organizational pattern. A person whose life has been directed to fill a two-part hole encounters a three-part entity, may try to make the part fit or dismiss it as an anomaly. However, when confronted by multiple examples thereof, the binary philosophy must either adapt accordingly, or alter the binary philosophy to maintain its dominance over the trinary. If Romeo and Juliet can not be accepted as a one-of-a-kind circumstance, then death permits them (and others) the illusion of their uniqueness, their specialness, the presumed preeminence of their relationship.

Janus-faced binary (72K)

While it is not customary to view Romeo and Juliet, much less the binary code imprinted on electrical circuits in terms of the dual orientation of sadism and masochism (regularly referred to as "S and M"); the giving and receiving of pain for sexual gratification can be viewed as the giving and receiving of energy "expressions". Though the metaphor can be stretched beyound its simple introduction here, the point to be made is that situational alternative binary formulas may be seen and confused as a third entity because the binary presents itself as a Janus-faced image though its counter-part is not easily seen.

Though the image to the right illustrates two easily distinguishable faces on one body, if one were engaged in a conversation with one face, the other face would be out of view. This act of "conversation" occurs amongst those immersed in writing lines of computer code atop the underlying binary foundation. They very often do not see nor even take a moment to acknowledge the face behind the face. And in succession, they do not see the atomic particle stratification taking place beneath the electronic circuitry. The human mind does not typically survey the activities on sub or super-levels of activity. While some work out strategies covering multiple dimensions, like a person setting up a series of dominoes, cards, popsicle sticks or the old mouse trap game to effect the visible performance of a human engineered butterfly effect as if it were a metamorphoses taking place by natural laws. This artificiality is what governs the usage of a binary code in computers. We humans have imposed it... and yet think from this artificiality we can somehow create a type of natural artificial intelligence.

Cocoon (49K)

If we take the stock of two-patterned relationships which have accumulated a wide-ranging social acknowledgement and put them all together, they would represent a type of historically displaced binary code. Some are antagonist, others are complimentary and still others work well as a complement. For example, we can have males and females who can work well together at a business, but are not compatible as a romantic or married couple. The obverse of this is also true. And we can have those who are noted potential antagonists, but retain a "working" relationship by indulging in an expressed respect for one another via the adage that one should keep their friends close but their enemies closer. All such arrangements on both the visible (celebrity) level and the invisible (non-celebrity) social levels are binary codes which affect the larger sociological perspective and act as relative balancing acts in terms of establishing harmony. Yet the practices of trinary expressions on this same social level tends toward creating what may be described as mutations in the form of:

  • Threesomes (two men one women, two women one man, three men, three women, two people one animal or object, etc...)
  • Triple X showcases (pornography)
  • Lovers triangles

While there are no doubt variations and other varieties that the reader may be aware of, these three examples suffice to illustrate what happens with a "three" event is tried on an expressed "two" event. Because the application of a "three" organization is applied to a "two-specific" expression, the "three-pattern" in the same form develops into a mutation. Hence, the "three" is being incorrectly applied and undeservedly denoted as a bad combination or code. The application of a trinary replication of an event that belongs primarily to a two-patterned realm, leads many observers to falsely interpret the "three" as a bad pattern... all because they, like so many others, are obsessed with a preoccupation of sexuality. Indeed, this preoccupation may express itself in the "scientific" analysis of social groups, familial relationships, mating practices and rituals of humans, animals, insects or in the realm of botany. All these so-called objected researchers are actually using their own underlying binary relationship formula. Medical professionals, sports aficionados, and the neighborhood dogs sniffing about, are all using binary formulas of association as a predominant orientation as a sociologically practiced expression of normalcy, because a three-patterned orientation is presently viewed as a dismissive anomaly or something not-normal and to be avoided.

But this is not to say that there are not compatible three-somes. For example, the old comedy team called the Three Stooges is one example... even if their were conflicts amongst them. Another example is the "Big Three" political leaders of World War II noted as Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. But it was Great Britain, France and Russia that were called the Allies while Germany, Italy and Japan were known as the evil counter-part called the Axis powers. However, there was a third grouping of three called the Central Powers consisting of an alliance amongst Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey. Hence, two groups of three set against one group of three. It was considered a world conflict revolving around a nation referring to itself as the Third Reich... and is today followed by a global mindset that a Third World War will follow the first two claimed as World Wars. However, what is being overlooked is that these three threes, including the Third Reich and Third World War scenario, are perspectives involving a dominant male presence or masculine involvement. It needs to be contrasted with a "three" perspective that is predominantly focused on the feminine presence.

Whereas in instances involving three females we are confronted by characterizations involving witchcraft such as the three witches in the tale of Macbeth, more modernized variations tend towards the Virgin- Mother- Crone variety. When women involve themselves in mass murders or suicide bombings, it typically signifies acts of desperation or severe manipulation such as the brain washing technique known as the Stockholm syndrome, in which captives begin to identify and agree with the perspective of their captives. But while women can come to know binary associations quite well and develop into pioneering binary code writers, they, like their male counter-parts, don't make the transition into a trinary frame of mind. They may exploit a singularity or dichotomy to the point of mastering and exceeding the view of their master, they don't transgress such boundaries. For example, women very often describe a person as being an "Old Soul" and may develop a person philosophy around this singular idea, but they don't progress beyond this tradition. They don't establish for themselves the recognition of a young and ancient soul to create the trinary of "Young Soul- Old Soul- Ancient Soul", even though they can readily discern these as separate and very applicable representations of different types of "soul", even though the word "soul" retains a rather enigmatic and imprecise definition. Nonetheless, those who have had some appreciation of the "Old Soul" concept, regardless of interpretation, know that the terms "Young and Ancient" presented in an overall trinary formula have some categorical value which helps to explain the varieties of soul which have been perceived.

One of the perceptions triggered by the concept of an "Old Soul" is the category of presumed existence called reincarnation. Some people believed they exist in a frame of reference best described as being re-born into another animate body. That they lived in the past and were somehow transported to the future in a present sense. This situation then provides them with a means to comprehend feelings or intimations of deja vu... that they have experienced something previously. However, rarely do most consider that perceptions have a regularity— due to the repetition of our biology, and that this regularity can set into play consistencies of perception and interpretation. There is no reason for people not to think or feel they haven't experienced something previously, when most people live in closed systems of perception and interpretation. What is different about such people, is their heightened acknowledgement of the categorized memories. While all of us have some expectation about one or another event to follow a given sequence, not all of us become hyper-vigilant about the memories thereof. It is this function of perception that we must try to incorporate into the binary system of computation by creating a trinary one... And yet, it is but one of several types of hyper, or extraordinary intellectual activity we must strive to include by way of superseding the present mechanisms of switching... that may require a combination of electrical, genetic, and atomic theories... as they are not now being investigated

australopithecus afarensis with binary gait (48K)

Whereas the present system of binary toggling is taking place on the level of a piano player switching between white (naturals) and black (sharps) keys or a typist between number and letter keys... separate symbol or function-only keys notwithstanding; simple on/off electrical switching is not enough. However, let us not look sight of the fact that it doesn't mean much if a computer (box) of switches takes place at the speed of a day, hour, milli-seconds or speed of light... if that which is being relayed is little more than idiocy or those in a position to retrieve enlightened knowledge are as mentally ill-equipped as would be an Australopithecine. A long established and practiced bi-pedal gait has no doubt played a role in cementing a binary rhythm-of-mind, even though the binary phenomena can be found in cellular division... it is well entrenched into the "sociology" of the right hemisphere's attributes... and is a structure which preceded the development of the left hemisphere's attributes that are in their fledgling stages of development... or we might surmise from its present intellectual antics. The right hemisphere uses various binary formulas as if they were an established business, religion and science coupled to a firm unimpeachable mathematical foundation.

And yet, although the binary is used as a system of categorization, it too is but another category. For example, if a person own two books there is no need for an elaborate means of categorization. The complexity is established by both quantity and quality, since having multiple copies of only two subjects renders the need for a complex system into an irrelevance unless dispersal and partialization is increased in both kind and quality. At present, the information being transmitted via a binary system is particularly infantile... in that a simple means of switching between binary orientations fulfill most needs... though the switching takes place at accelerated speeds compared to when a person flips a light switch on and off.

slow switch (16K)

A common 'person speed' of switching.
medium switch (16K)

After drinking coffee or an energy drink.
fast switch (16K)

A very slow computer switching speed.

With the desire to increase the complexity of switching as if this will automatically produce some higher level emergent property to be defined as "automated", "accentuated", or "artificial" intelligence, the basic binary switch must be transformed in deed and not merely definition. Changing the name of a binary coupling or transposing effects, does not give rise to the birth of a new computational species... it merely describes a larger domain of the binary that had not previously been explored. Simply adding more binary keys only makes the binary formula more complex, but it does not produce an evolved species of switching. The On/Off will have to take a step back and proceed towards a territory of binary perception that involves intervals inter-dependent with such concepts as distance, delay, duration, dimension, deflection, direction, deformation, depth, density (particles/space), "determination" (intensity), departure, dormancy, declination, declaration, etc...

Though the above "D-assigned" considerations take place in binary situations, they can be used to promote a stand-alone trinary configuration. Whereas we have the black/white keys of a piano, and the major/minor, flats/sharps and transposition of pitch between higher and lower; manipulation of standard binary formulas and even the creation of new ones, remains a binary practice... no matter how complex and intelligent one defines their given practice. The limitations of the binary formula, even if one discovers or produces a binary example that no one else has, is revealing a landscape that is akin to the practice of living in two dimensions and defining it as a unique experience.
