Is it a coincidence that we see a recurring 3-to-1 ratio, or suggestive of a perspective with need of a further indulgence of consideration?

  • 3 -to- 1 ratio is a foundational (Mendelian) concept in understanding inheritance patterns in genetics.
3 to 1 ratio example
  • 3 STOP codons (UAA, UAG, UGA); 1 START codon (AUG)
  • 3 (DNA) bases code for: 1 amino acid
  • 3 "ribbon"- like protein structures: Secondary- Tertiary- Quaternary, 1 "bead"- like structure: Primary
  • 3 amino acids the same: (adenosine- cytosine- guanine); plus 1 is different: Thymine (DNA), Uracil (RNA)
3 to 1 ratio in basic DNA and RNA composition

As an aside note, when we compare the usage of a coma in numbers to distinguish the separation between the hundreds and the thousands place in a series of numbers:

3 to 1 ratio shows up routinely

...with the "and" used as a separator such as in the case of Adenosine, Cytosine, Guanine "and" Uracil (or Thymine):

series of words

...the comma in the number grouping is placed in a from right to left sequence, while the "and" in the word grouping is placed in a from left to right sequence. This may suggest that the "right to left" usage in numbers had an early middle eastern (Arabic?) influence, (since both modern numbers and this method of writing had much of their influential beginnings in this area), but the "left to right" placement of a series separator in words did not have.

When describing the triplet and three-to-one patterns in DNA and RNA, some readers may still argue that there are only two nucleic Acids. However, when comparing them, we frequently see that these two are portrayed in three-patterned illustrations like a three-part logical syllogism:

Components of Nucleic Acids

A biological model of a logical construct
Nucleic Acids

The Central Dogma of molecular biology, which at first was formulated as a simple (3-group) linear progression of information from DNA to RNA to Protein, is summarized in the following illustration. The replication process on the left consists of passing information from a parent DNA molecule to daughter molecules. The middle transcription process copies this information to a mRNA molecule. Finally, this information is used by the chemical machinery of the ribosome to make polypeptides:

From DNA to RNA to Protein
Triangular modeo of DNA, RNA, Protein complex

As more has been learned about these relationships, the central dogma has been refined to the representation displayed on the right. The dark blue arrows show the general, well demonstrated, information transfers noted above. It is now known that an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase enzyme, known as a reverse transcriptase, is able to transcribe a single-stranded RNA sequence into double-stranded DNA (magenta arrow). Such enzymes are found in all cells and are an essential component of retroviruses (e.g. HIV), which require RNA replication of their genomes (green arrow). Direct translation of DNA information into protein synthesis (orange arrow) has not yet been observed in a living organism. Finally, proteins appear to be an informational dead end, and do not provide a structural blueprint for either RNA or DNA.
